Avebury

It had only been two weeks since my last visit to Avebury, but it seemed to be a completely different season. It was cold, grey and raining. The sarsen stones are sometimes known as 'grey wethers' because of their similarity to sheep, and from a distance some of them turned out actually to be sheep, huddled against the henge banks, their flanks muddied and moist. I walked along Herepath and along the henge that borders the south-east quadrant of the stone circle back to Beckhampton Road and into the village, but did not linger long.
