Gem In The Sonoran Desert

I forgot to check the theme for Wide Wednesday and don't have time (or an idea) for "Lines," the actual theme. I figured I'd just throw up what I had.  Check it out in full screen mode.

The city of Tucson is surrounded by five different ranges. This one is referred to as the Scenic Santa Ritas.  More than any other mountain range in Arizona, the  Santa Ritas are known for their biodiversity.  It is also the home of Madera Canyon, a world famous spot for bird watching. Something most people don't know is that it is the only place in the United States and Canada where four wild cat species have been spotted, at least twice on a single camera within a 24-hour period: the endangered jaguar and ocelot and the more common bobcat and mountain lion.

Mt. Wrightson, at 9453 ft/ 2882 m is the highest point in the range and the entire Tucson region. The peak of  Mt. Hopkins, at 8553 ft/2607 m is home to the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory, operated by the University of Arizona and the Smithsonian.

The peak furthest to the left is Mt. Wrightson, the one furthest to the right is Mt. Hopkins. The 'mini-mountain' on the right is called Elephant Head.
