Democracy week in the UK

This year the UK is holding events to celebrate 100 years of (some) women having the vote. 'Democracy week' is under way. I attended a free-to-all event at the museum, and listened to a talk by local historian and councillor Chas Townley, about Stroud's own suffragist and councillor, Margaret Hills, nee Robertson. Her marriage in 1914 to Dr Hill put an end to her suffragist activities, but she later became a town councillor in Stroud, and was responsible for having the first social housing for older people built in Stroud, in the 1930s.Coincidentally, those very bungalows still stand, in the street where I live! A new housing development in Stroud, completed in 2016, is named after her.

Aside from Margaret Hills' history, I learned that girls of the Edwardian era rarely received a secondary education. Can you imagine? Yes, probably, but I'm struggling with that one.

The photo is from Chas's slide show..Apparently all the major religions supported women's suffrage. Suffragists weren't just a few troublemakers, bombing letterboxes and the like, as some of the history books would have us believe.

Afterwards I went to the supermarket, bought an ice cream, and ate it in the park, whilst reading and watching families at rest and play in Stratford Park. A band was playing on the bandstand. All very English.

Came home, the football was still going on. Extra time AND a penalty shoot out. Eventually Russia won on penalties. It's just gone to penalties again, Croatia Vs. Denmark. Tense!

Meanwhile, I've filled out a long application form and finished reading a novel. Only a few more things to do this evening.
