Bird Garden

Went mad a few weeks ago and bought what looked like a nice feeder which hangs below the bird table. The bird table I normally have sunflower kernels but decided to put other seeds in this hanger. The only trouble was the birds, most blue tits and coal tits, were getting through almost a whole hanger-full in a day or so except instead of eating it most was falling to the ground. So I fitted this tray thing thinking it would cut down on the ground mess and reduce wastage because I thought once the hanger got empty the birds would eat from the dish. And I resolved not to refill the hanger until the dish was mostly clear.

Now what? Although I sometimes see birds, including the robin, take from the tray it's mostly ignored and now it's sprouting grass. My theory is that bird food manufacturers deliberately fill the bags with 10% of seeds that birds like and the other 90% is seeds that normal birds don't eat. So the birds are just being selective and rejecting what they regard as rubbish food. Perhaps they'll be less fussy in winter. The manufacturers would doubtless say that their food is fine and we just have very fussy birds.
