Nicky and her Nikon

Our last day

We awoke up to another beautiful sunny day, but by the time we set off for our hike it was already getting cloudy. Today we drove around the mountain past Davos to a tiny hamlet called Glaris, from where we planned to walk to Monstein. Monstein is known for two things - firstly it is where Monstein Beer is brewed, which according to Gavin, is rather excellent - and secondly it has just been voted one of Switzerland's top ten most beautiful villages. I am not so sure about that, I think I have seen other more beautiful villages although it lies in a lovely part of the valley and it has a very attractive church, as can be seen in the extras. It is also home to this pretty Swiss chalet, also in the extras.

When we were about to start our walk it started raining, so we ducked into a mountain restaurant for coffee while we waited for the rain to stop. Thereafter it was a mixture of sunshine and a bit of rain. My main image is a rather derelict barn/hut that we walked past, and I have a fondness for these barns and I liked how this one sat so perfectly in that spot overlooking the valley below.

Now we are busy packing up, as we go home tomorrow - Gavin nipped out for a quick 9 holes of golf, which only takes him about an hour when he plays by himself. I made breakfast for our journey (overnight oats with chopped up fruit, nuts and seeds) and then also lunch (chicken quinoa salad). We are beyond eating stale croissants from the French roadside diners, which I cannot even eat being gluten intolerant. Much better to have our own healthy food!

I always leave here feeling very sad to be going home - we have been coming here every summer and winter for 14 years now and the magic has not faded, it is such a beautiful place that I could happily spend many more weeks here.

Luke had another telephone appointment with the surgeon today to discuss his options, and he also had a physio session very early this morning before work and discussed the issue with the physiotherapist who knows his injury history. He cannot have surgery during his internship, and shortly after that we go on our family holiday for 10 days, so he has decided to forgo his trip to SE Asia and have his surgery after our family holiday. It's all booked and we hope it will work this time.

Early to bed tonight as we plan to leave at about 3.30am tomorrow morning!
