Thank You For the Days ..

Old Ways

We were out for a wander in the hills south of here today. A drive with lots of stops along the way to poke in odd corners.

The main picture is Pennymuir Village Hall. There is no village.

It stands by a single-track road, all by itself, and though it is decayed enough to qualify as a Derelect Sunday entry, it is still used on one day of the year, the day the Upper Kale Water Agricultural Society holds its Annual Show and Sports Day.  I've never been, but it sounds like a good day out!  Lots of sheep, and sticks, and terrier racing.

Why there, you might ask.  In front of it there's an information board telling you that you are looking at the site of several Roman marching camps, and today, with everything so dry, we could actually see the outlines of the ditches.

Dere Street, the Roman road from York up to the Antonine Wall, runs along side.  After the legions left this was used for many centuries by Scottish drovers to get their cattle to markets in the south.

A bit later, we found ourselves again crossing Dere Street (extra).  I had to speak firmly to TM, who was tempted to take the LandRover along it, as the sign seemed to be inviting him to do. I reminded him that on more than one occasion, he has had to be towed out of places like that ....

Many thanks, Marlieske, for hosting the Derelict Sunday challenge!
