The Lozarithm Lens

Calne (Saturday 11th August 2018)

The Lansdowne Strand Hotel dates from the 16th century, when it was a coaching inn called the Catherine Wheel, and later the Lansdowne Arms Hotel. This courtyard was a brewery and kitchen garden and led directly to the land up to Bowood House. I have never thought to go to the courtyard to sit when I've been there, and actually it isn't as scenic as it appears here as it faces the pub car park.

This view is one I took a few days earlier with no card in the camera and was recreated on Saturday. The Extra shows the front of the pub.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The White Stripes - Jolene (2000)
Jolene must be one of Dolly Parton's most covered songs. The Sisters Of Mercy, Laura Marling, Strawberry Switchblade, Natalie Merchant, One Dove, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos are among those who have recorded or performed the song, and there have been several answer songs representing Jolene's point of view, including Caroline by Kirsty Maccoll. The landlady at the Bull in The Archers is even named after her.
The White Stripes featurewd the song in their stage act for many years, but I wasn't aware there was a studio version of it by them until I found it collected on Rough Trade Shops: Covers (Vol. 1), which I played on this day. It was to be found on the B-side of their single Hello Operator.
