Anhinga - a bird that swims

I am not sure if I ever saw Anhinga birds before moving to Florida. The word Anhinga is Brazilian and means snake bird. Fitting, don't you agree? These birds dive into the water & swim underwater. They also swim with only their head and necks above water, looking like a snake.

This one was swimming right in front of my house with a fish that was a little too big for him. I believe he attracted the attention of a great blue heron, who was looking at the un-swallowed fish. The great heron was on the shore in my yard, probably hoping the Anhinga would drop the halfway downed fish! This is the first time the great blue heron has visited me in my own yard --not the other side of the canal. Oh, the wonders of Florida!
