Mallard the Ferry

Good to see the Windermere chain ferry working. An engine fire in June put the ferry out of action until the end of October. Not a great summer for the businesses on the west side of the Lake who rely on the ferry to get the tourists across to them. The Lake is 12 miles long but only 500 mtrs wide at the point the ferry uses,  so it's a lot quicker to use the ferry - when its working. This ferry was built in 1990 although it looks a lot older.  There's a wonderful picture of a predecessor here, taken in the same spot I reckon.
