Innocent

A day in Edinburgh. It was my friend's birthday and she met a few of us for a city walk before going back to her house for dinner later.

Part of our walk was along the route of the former "Innocent Railway" including its tunnel (pictured).

The tunnel was built in 1831 as part of the railway designed to carry coal from Dalkeith to Edinburgh. It is not certain why the Innocent Railway was so called, but the main theory is that it is due to the carriages being horse-drawn rather than by steam engines - a more 'innocent' or 'safe' way to travel.

The railway line closed in 1968 and is now part of the National Cycle Network as well as being a popular path for walkers.
