The nut-loving nuthatch

It seems that nuthatches love nuts, so I guess we know where they get their name. Both white-breasted and red-breasted nuthatches will frequently visit backyard feeders, pick up seeds in their beaks and carry them to another tree or other nearby location where they tuck their tasty find into the tree bark. At a later time, they can return and hack (or hatch) at the seed with their pointy beak to get at the tasty morsel inside. Another curious habit of these birds is the fact that they are very good upside-down climbers. They can often be seen walking down the trunk of a tree. Today's extra is a red-breasted nuthatch.
