Mothering Sunday

Today is Mothering Sunday in the UK - purists in the UK do not like to call it Mother's Day as that is an American custom which was commercialised by Hallmark. Mothering Sunday is always on the fourth Sunday of Lent and goes back to the 16th century. Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family. Mother's Day was initiated in the USA in the 20th century by Anne Reeves Jarvis, and in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honour mothers.

I was very blessed today to have all three boys with me for Mothering Sunday - that has not happened since 2015. I was given a beautiful bouquet of flowers today and cards that had been thoughtfully written. We went out for a delicious lunch where Gavin took this photo. When we left the staff gave each mother a  pretty potted rose. Although it was sunny today it was very breezy and cooler than yesterday.
