No joke

Brexit embarrassment rumbles on. I’m fatigued from trying to follow the nuances of each development. Mozambicans have stopped asking for updates, but are left with the general impression that the British nation is clowning around. Chitchat today focused more on the heat, which threatened to top the mid 30s. Usually this would be the Mozambican transitional period into autumn, so the high temperatures are a resurgence. Overall the period of extreme heat is shorter here than I experienced in South East Asia. In Cambodia it was comfortable to sleep without aircon for 1-2 months of the year only. Here it’s more like 6-7. Maputo does have a very favourable climate overall.

A useful day at work, even though it was long. I left with that feeling of accomplishing a few key tasks and that the workload was more under control at the end, compared to the start. The feeling of having achieved a level of productivity and then indulging (YouTube political coverage is one of my pastimes) in pure relaxation should clearly be a nightly feeling, yet happens less often than it should.

Strong smelling bins are a feature of Maputo, often with a trash collector fumbling with the contents, looking for items to salvage and trade. This row is a few metres from my office, and behind the wall are various military buildings. This area contains various barracks and men in fatigues stationed at points along the road. They look quite baffled as I stroll or cycle past.
