Mortsafe

This iron mortsafe stands near the front entrance to Colinton Parish Church. Its purpose, in the early nineteenth century, was to protect the bodies of the newly dead from the body snatchers who would sell corpses to the medical school for dissection. Fortunately medical schools have other ways of teaching their students these days and the mortsafe is an interesting relic but not in use.

I was through in Colinton today to have coffee at the Swing with the daughter of mum's late friend. As the beadle said - here comes the next generation. We had a good catch up and reminisce and it was nice to feel we were carrying on a tradition. The Swing is celebrating its 20th birthday and the menu is at 1999 prices all week.

After coffee, lunch at a cafe in Juniper Green which is a favourite of hazelh. A walk to Currie and back, another walk when I got home and yoga tonight. During the past two days my step count has been poor but I'm putting that right today.

Also celebrating a birthday today is my former employer. Happy 50th to the wonderful Open University and many happy returns. Reading all the congratulations made me feel quite emotional.

Our lovely grandson, now a week old, has his name at last and we are delighted.
