A view from Jeanneb

Two ferry Monday

We were up early (very) to get the 7.20am ferry from Tarbert (Isle of Harris) to Uig (Isle of Skye). Sad to leave Harris especially as our guest house was exceptional. The couple running it really went the extra mile. He was from Yorkshire (of course) and both had been head teachers in North Yorkshire before deciding to take early retirement to do other things. Without asking we were given a packed breakfast for the ferry.

We alighted at 9.00am so had plenty of time ahead of us. We didn’t have time to go around the very top of Totternish before so did so today. Very different scenery and great views of the Isles of Harris and Lewis so we’re glad we did. We stopped to take a look at Kilmuir cemetery to see the Flora Macdonald memorial. We were surprised to see a very modern headstone to (Lee) Alexander McQueen who died in 2010. Apparently his father was from here.

Drove down to Sconser for the ferry to Raasay (this ferry doesn’t take bookings you just turn up) and got here a bit early, so after a drink we headed out to follow a couple of local trails. One the Emigrants trail through a wooded glen. It’s a memorial to those islanders who emigrated because of the clearances. Sadly the information boards were hard to read. We took the next trail to Temptation Hill. This is the view from the top looking over our hotel. Great location for the last two nights of our holiday. You can see the ferry landing and, in the extra, this evening’s ferry arriving in glorious sun. It has got warmer and warmer today we ended up pretty hot after our walk so had another drink enjoying the view from the terrace outside.
( One reason for coming to Raasay is that I’m told granddaughter’s Ancestors originated here!)
Time for dinner with the same view!
