Acorn Street, Beacon Hill

What a spectacular city Boston is. Full of history, lovely old buildings and curved streets.

We covered many a mile from the hotel to Boston Common for Boston African American trail winding its way through the narrow streets of Beacon Hill. The area is less American and more European. Even the street lights still burned gas.

Today’s blip is Acorn Street, reputedly the most picturesque and photographed street in the City. The area was at the heart of the abolition of slavery movement, an issue that was eventually settled by the American Civil War.

After returning to Boston Common we picked up the Freedom Trail to Bunker Hill, site of an early battle between the British and the Colonists. The monument commemorating the battle has 294 steps and of course, we had to climb them. Spectacular views from the top.

The Freedom Trail takes in many of the main historical places in the city, including the site of the Boston Massacre.

We were denied entry to go aboard the USS Constitution as we didn’t have any of the required ID on us. Well have to go back tomorrow.

Instead of walking back we took the water taxi from Charlestown Navel Base back to Liberty Pier in Seaport. A fine ride across Boston Harbour with great views of the city skyline.

We were not done, but we were almost done in! Back at the hotel we enjoyed drinks and snacks at the hotel’s happy hour then set off to City Hall Plaza to join the vast crowd watching the Bruins play St Louis in the first game of the Stanley Cup final. The Bruins won 4-2 coming back from two goals down. Only another 6 possible games to go!
