The wreck of the Juanita

The weather was a completely different proposition this morning - dry at first then becoming sunny and warm. We left South Ronaldsay and stopped a couple of times on the east side of the Orkney mainland before heading in to Kirkwall. Our last stop before the town was at Inganess where this wreck lies beached. It might seem perverse to blip this when there is so much gorgeousness around in Orkney's natural environment but as many blippers, especially diving blippers, will know there are loads of deliberately wrecked and scuttled ships, as well as accidentally sunk ones, in the waters around Orkney. This boat was deliberately sunk as one of the ships blocking Scapa Flow in WW2 then left here at Inganess some years later when its scrap value was deemed negligible. After a wee wander round Kirkwall and an Orkney ice-cream we are now in the queue for the Westray ferry (see extra) where we will arrive about 17:45. We will be making straight for Jack's Chippy where our haddock suppers are on order before letting ourselves into lovely Daybreak Cottage. We stayed a week in Daybreak last year so we know what to expect and we expect it to be perfect.
