Rousham House

Enjoyable visit today to Rousham House and Gardens with our local historical society.

'The house was built in 1635 by Sir Robert Dormer and has been owned and lived in by the same family ever since.

It was remodelled by William Kent (1685-1748) who added the wings and the stable block, and the south front is almost as Kent left it. He also made alterations to the interior of the house, which retains some 17th century panelling and the original staircase.

The 25 acre garden was also designed by Kent and is one of the few gardens of this date to have escaped alteration.'

There were lots of damselflies about on the river at the bottom part of the gardens (see first extra).

Apart from our party (you have to book to see the house) there weren't many other visitors about (and no tearoom so no good for a blipmeet!). The gardener you can just see in the second extra which shows the house was not particularly friendly. I don't think he was happy mowing the extensive lawns with such a small mower.

Update - just tagged this for Wide Wednesday, it's historical, and the second extra is wide!
