Time to leave ......

We have had a fantastic week in Northumberland, and will definitely come again soon.

I took this just before we left. To my right is the farmhouse where we have been staying. We stood here last night on our return from a lovely meal in Amble, talking to the farmer about growing wheat (he is hoping the sunlight and nitrogen levels will mean it will be good enough for bread making). Also the problems with poaching (we had just seen a roe deer on the other side of the farm, and there are lots of hares so illegal hare coursing is a big problem). And then the barn owl did a fly past, the second time we had seen it here. This morning red admiral and painted lady butterflies were fluttering around on the bush to my left.

In the distance in Alnmouth, the church clock can be clearly seen every evening. And out of sight to my right is Amble. A former coal port, it is on the way up. The regeneration of the town by the Amble Development Trust is impressive. And we have had three fantastic evening meals in three different places there.

We returned via Morpeth, a stop at the ruins of Chester Fort, lunch at the Sill (our third time there), and then straight down the military road to Carlisle.
