Quod oculus meus videt

New Velvet

It's that time of year, where red and fallow deer re-grow their antlers after casting last year's in early spring.   I was driving back from the supermarket when I saw this young red stag in the field adjacent to the road. This young deer was sporting his new velvet, looking resplendent with his first branches this year. Typically, he was alone and he was less than impressed that a vehicle had stopped opposite his position in the field.

The view was partly obscured so I tried to get a better position by getting out of the car.  As ever he was very wary of humans, and I only managed a couple of photos before it was all 'bum' shots as he headed away across the field.
