Hawkshead and Coniston

We had a more relaxed day today. It was raining when I woke up so I sat in bed reading. Jon was out with the dog early, but once he got back we went back to a nice cafe almost next door, called Poppi Red where we had brunch. The cafes all seem to have gifts and pictures for sale as well as drinks and food. The village of Hawkshead is tiny, but has a nice selection of shops. After our brunch we browsed the shops again, had another (failed) attempt to find a geocache we had looked for Monday night, then went back to the cottage. Luckily for us, not too much rain, although it has been more chilly.

In the afternoon we drove to Coniston. As most people will know, it is on Coniston Water that Donald Campbell died in his attempt to break the water speed record in 1967. He had held the record many times already. We had a walk around the few shops. There was a really lovely antiques and collectibles shop. I couldn’t resist buying myself 2 original 1950’s magazine adverts. One for ‘Spangles’ and the other for Rowntrees Fruit gums. I’ll photograph them tomorrow for you. I want to frame them - and perhaps put them on the wall in the new toilet!!!

We walked down to the lake, and had tea/coffee/cake in a lakeside cafe. It started to get cooler but we sat for a while, reading our books.

Drove home the scenic route on very narrow roads, back through Grizedale Forest. Everywhere is so picturesque.

Mollie cooked fajitas for tea and now we are playing Yahtzee - and both Mollie and Daniel got Yahtzee in their first go!!!! Unheard of!
