WidWed - Scammonden Dam

Today I'm gambling on engineering being a (loosely) associated  branch of the sciences for the purpose of my entry to the WidWed challenge.

This is Scammonden Dam   -  a multipurpose structure that creates a reservoir as well as supporting a 10km stretch of the M62 motorway between junctions 22 and 23.  At the time the motorway was planned, the Water Authority was looking at a proposal for a dam and a reservoir, but the proposal put forward suggested that by sitting the dam on the route of the motorway across Deanhead Valley, it would be possible to create a larger reservoir.

The result was a 4,200 sq. metre dam, reservoir and motorway and the largest single span fixed arch bridge in the U.K.   It was designed by Rofe, Kennard and Lapworth and the main contractor was MacAlpine and Sons.

Many thanks for the comments, stars and Hrts left for yesterday’s blip, they’re all very much appreciated, and thank you to steveng for hosting WidWed this week.
