Corridor of Power

Well that is the office week over.

Today was quite painless. I was sent to attend a meeting in Parliament this morning, substituting for the Boss (still on holiday).

It was a ministerial briefing for MSPs and MPs on a subject which affects our constituency and several others. As well as the Cabinet Secretary and a Minister, we had 3 MPs and 6 or 7 MSPs. And me, of course.

Perhaps the biggest thing I took from it was how impressive the Cabinet Secretary (Derek Mackay) is, especially when compared to the “all mouth and no trousers” versions in Westminster. I am used to seeing him from time to time on Scottish Parliament TV in the chamber and in committees, but as he himself pointed out, a ministerial briefing is a much more collaborative and informal situation.

I was also impressed by the Minister (Paul Wheelhouse) who complemented and supported his boss with his specialist knowledge.

When it came to the MPs and MSPs it was interesting to discover which ones knew what they were talking about and which ones felt the need to speak without having anything to say.

As always, working in that building was a pleasure and it is still a little bit of a surprise to emerge opposite the front door of Holyrood Palace - into a throng of tourists.

I had to rush back to the office rather than hang around Edinburgh for lunch - pity.
