Ingenuity

L and I went into Kirkwall with Dad this afternoon so that we could visit the annual exhibition by the flower arranging society. There were stunning displays with great ingenuity in the props and flowers chosen, all on the theme of Celebration, it being the society's 60th anniversary. I've blipped a collage of three: Wedding (the display had memorabilia from a wedding on July 25th 1959 - I was then 1 week old!); Guy Fawkes; and Mother's Day. There was another I particularly liked which depicted a classic Orcadian day within the context of it being the society's big anniversary, but sadly it was very popular and I couldn't photo it for the bodies around!

This morning L and I went for a beach wander and comb. Seals followed us close in (10') along the strand; when we returned half an hour later they were still chilled, wallowing in the shallows or snoozing vertically like shiny floats. No Groatie Buckies were found but who cares with so many pretty shells and fragments to distract us.

This evening we attended an interesting couple of short talks run by the Orkney Archaeology Society; this county has so much archaeology per square metre that it's hard to know where to start! Anyway, tonight's two presentations were different aspects of coastal archaeology, one looking primarily at changing sea levels and the very different landscapes of our ancestors, and the other at coastal erosion or deposition wrt archaeological sites and the questions it raises.

Another good day.
