The Edge of the Wold

Tucked

The tail end of Storm Dennis was still blowing through this afternoon. Water levels at Leighton Moss are high and the perch favoured by the coots is underwater. The island in the Causeway Pool is also submerged, though the cormorants are determinedly staying put.

There were fewer coots and ducks than usual - where have they gone? There was no sign of the little grebes.  Only a few coots and teal were dabbling in front of the hide. The mute swans were tucking their necks in and reducing their sail area as much as possible, but even so they were drifting about with the wind, even colliding with each other occasionally.

But it looks like we've been spared the worst of the storm. We managed to get home from East Yorkshire yesterday afternoon without being buffeted by the wind, nor having to drive through torrential rain. Traffic was much quieter than usual, a lot of people heeding the weather warnings and staying put.
