Bees

A cool, gray day here in Portland. Not too much going on, some meetings, lots of talking and planning. Squeezed in another round of golf with my girlfriends this afternoon.

But the bees were out in force again this afternoon! For some reason they're literally flocking to this Centaura montana 'Amethyst in Snow' - a perennial Bachelor Button. At one time I saw three bees on this same flower! Unfortunately that photo wasn't good enough to share.

The genus name Centaurea has its roots in Greek mythology - it was used to heal Chiron the Centaur. The common name 'Bachelor Button' may come from English folklore. If a bachelor placed this flower in his lapel or jacket pocket while courting, and the next day it was still fresh, then the relationship was meant to last.
