Gently down the stream

Butser to Portsmouth

Had a walk on Butser Hill this morning. Blimey, was it cold. The wind chill was something else, despite the beautiful sunshine. Butser is one of the highest points on the South Downs (the 2nd highest I think). It also, rather wonderfully, qualifies as a 'Marilyn'

According to Wikipedia, A Marilyn is a mountain or hill in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland or Isle of Man with a relative height of at least 150 metres (492 ft), regardless of absolute height or other merit. The name was coined as a punning contrast to the designation Munro, used of a Scottish mountain with a height of more than 3,000 feet (914.4 m), which is homophonous with (Marilyn) Monroe.

Okay, that's the nerd stuff. Suffice it to say, it's a ruddy great hill which allows you to see the 10 miles to Langstone Harbour (Portsmouth) and beyond. I rather love it that if you look closely here you can see a tanker out in mid Channel. I'm not even going to guess how far that is!

Enjoy the sunshine x
