Henry Bergh...

...a diplomat & activist for the humane treatment of children & animals. In 1866 he founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), & founded the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in 1874. Ironic that it took longer to get protection for children than it did for animals, but he was always working on their behalf.
This statue of Henry was made of bronze by American Artist James H. Mahoney & stands outside the Humane Society in Milwaukee. It shows Henry holding his cane in his right hand & petting a dog that has a bandaged paw with his left. It was created in 1891 & is 9 feet tall. I passed it on Wisconsin Ave. as I was driving this morning, & fortunately the light was red long enough for me to roll the window down & get a picture of it. :))
