Winter Theme

A little staged but I wanted to share some of the winter squash we harvested today, and against the Winterberry Bush, their colors popped (note the “winter” theme)! • From L to R: spaghetti, pumpkin, butternut, and in the front, delicata • I learned something today, something I’ve never thought of before. The word “squash” comes from the Narragansett Native American word “askutasquash”, which means “eaten raw or uncooked” • Northeastern Native Americans grew pumpkins, yellow crooknecks, patty pans, Boston marrows and turbans - all winter squash except for the summer crookneck; pilgrims did not like winter squash at first but after their first harsh winter, they depended on them for food. Their hard shells were ideal for storage, they roasted or boiled them, and then dried their empty shells to use as bowls • We’ve had a busy day working in the garden, and the weather could not have been more perfect • A cold bottle of Shipyard’s Pumpkinhead is going to taste mighty fine! • Cheers!
