Lathyrus Odoratus

Meadow Brown

A very warm and sunny walk up to Blackcap and along the Downs with the spaniel this morning. Thirteen butterfly species seen, which seems very good for the time of year. There are still quite a lot of Meadow Brown around. I particularly liked this one because of the backlighting. The Meadow Brown hasn't always had a good press. It appears (inside out and in a devilish guise) on the right hand panel of The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch and its genus name Maniola means 'little ghost'.
