Autumn Colours in the grey

The torrential rain of yesterday stopped sometime in the night and today was thick overcast with no variation in the sky; just very grey. On days like this the autumn colours are somewhat muted but even more important for eyes starved of colour.
This is taken just outside Härnösand Cathedral, as we are heading in to take part in Evensong, vespers. This is not part of the Swedish church's tradition but is copied from the Anglican liturgy. Today there are 25 of us in the congregation (the limited places booked online in advance), and 25 in the choir, which equals 50, the maximum number who can gather in these Covid times in Sweden.
Because Sweden's way of dealing with Covid is different to most countries there has been a fair bit written about it, but because the Swedish response is part of the Swedish total system it is hard to understand at first glance.
Probably the most important element of the Swedish strategy is mutual trust between the people and the government. If the government gives advice it trusts people to follow it. The people tend to trust that advice, so they do follow it - a virtuous circle.
So, the public health advice,  was pretty much the same as everywhere in Europe. The difference is that here people in general followed the advice so there was no need for further measures.
One reason people followed the advice was that sickness and unemployment benefit were made more generous, so they could afford to stay home. In our area anyone working for the county or council on zero hours contracts had their contracts upgraded so they were eligible for benefits if they stayed home.
One area that was locked down, almost from the start, was care homes. So the majority of Swedish deaths, which were in care homes, would have happened even if Sweden followed the path taken by the rest of Europe.  The pandemic, with thousands of dead old people, showed the downsides of New Public Management.
I won't go into more detail but the message I'm trying to give here is that you cannot just copy one element of any country's system, because it is an integral part of a whole system.
OK, enough ranting, or is it preaching? Stay healthy and enjoy the autumn colours.
