Preparing For Winter

Another day of overcast skies, trending towards rain as the afternoon went on. I struggled to get inspired, which is unusual, and almost passed by this little scene. Then it struck me that the empty nut shells told a storey about the season. Framing up in the viewfinder, I became engaged and the search for a suitable arrangement began.

In Lightroom, I toned down the oranges a bit and boosted the green shell, which although only a small area of the image, provides much needed contrast of hue. As with yesterday's image of the asters, I was quite surprised by the level of detail in the dark spots, in this case in between the grass stalks. I think the image relies more on texture than colour and for that reason I preferred a desaturated rendition.
