Cambridge

It was a cold morning but there no snow at home as was forecast a few days ago. Gavin took Xena to the woods for a walk while I did some chores at home and by 10am we left to go to Cambridge to collect Tommy from university for the end of term.

It rained all the way there and when we got there and got out the car it was freezing cold with a thin layer of snow in parts where the rain had not yet washed it away. We wondered around the town with Xena so I could take some photos. We were pleasantly surprised to see so many students wearing masks when out and about, I would have thought they did not bother. Tommy tells us the colleges have had strict Covid rules this term which is why they managed to stay in control of the cases at university.

We then went to the pub where we had arranged to have lunch, sitting outside in a covered area with heaters but it was still so cold! Tommy and Adam joined us and also Adam’s new girlfriend. Lunch was ordered and paid for via an app and we felt their Covid measures were very good. It was lovely to see the boys again. Tommy has had a good term and ready for more work over the holidays! (They only have a 8 week term but then always have so much work over the holidays) Adam will come home later this month as he still has work to do and it’s not easy to stop in the middle of scientific research, you have to get to a point where you can shut the process down for a while.

After lunch we went to the college to collect Tommy’s stuff. The college gates were locked and controlled by the porter who let us in once Tommy had identified us. We were not allowed in to his room but had to wait by the car. We also saw Inca which was lovely.

It was an easy drive home, although 5 minutes from home there was an accident on the A3 and an enormous tailback had already built up on the motorway, thankfully for us it was on the opposite side of the motorway as those poor cars will be stuck there for a long while as the motorway was shut.

It has been a long day but it was lovely to get out and see a change of scenery again. This is a view of Trinity College with the chapel from St John's College behind it. The first extra is my favourite lane, Trinity Lane which often features in TV dramas and movies - if you watch Grantchester you would often have seen Robson Green and James Norton walking along this lane.
