New York!

After almost 5 weeks of being on call for work, I finally got a trip today!  I was officially on call at midnight and the call came in at 1201. I was able to go back to sleep but I was at the airport by 730 and by 10am I was jetting off to Newark, with a stay on Manhattan.

It was good to be back at work and to see some of my colleagues, and to welcome a few (very few!) passengers on board. It was also great to be back in the Big Apple! For many years our crew hotel was in the suburbs, but it looks as if we are going to be staying in the city now, which makes us very happy. We always prefer the city to the suburbs.

The weather wasn’t great. It was raining most of the evening. But I didn’t let it stop me. Off I went to explore a bit. I walked to Bryant Park where there is an ice-rink. I didn’t skate, but it was fun to watch for awhile. There was a Christmas market which was fun to look around. I would have liked to have eaten there, but there was very little covered seating. I didn’t really want to eat in the rain!

I then walked to Times Square and enjoyed a bit of the atmosphere there (see Extra photo). New York wasn’t a ghost town, exactly, but it was hardly busy. I’ve been to Manhattan in the days before Christmas in previous years, and it’s normally heaving. Maybe if it hadn’t been raining there would have been more people around.  Everyone was masked, with only a handful of exceptions that I noticed. Masks are required both indoors and outdoors in New York unless you are in your private home.

I finally got food - I picked up a pizza on my way back to the hotel and ate in my room. A very enjoyable day!
