Wildfire Memorial

In remembrance of
an horrific summer of
loss and heroism

~ carliewired

In the summer of 2003 our region suffered the worst wildfires in memory. Thirteen thousand people had to be evacuated from their homes and then supported elsewhere. 89 homes and 7 businesses were destroyed. 62,000 hectares of forest and range lands were burned. Hundreds of people were left jobless.

As in any crisis, there were the stories of escapes and heroic efforts. The tireless work of firefighters, emergency workers and volunteers saved this event from being a tragedy.

Light snow is falling on the "Wildfire Memorial" by Cameron Kerr this afternoon. I noticed that someone has given a face mask to the senior seated on the far left. It does remind me of the Bernie Sanders meme that has been filling the internet this week.
