White Arse

A bird with a white rump flashed past us on the Lodge Farm track and settled ahead in a bramble bush. I guessed that it was a bullfinch but was wrong. It was a wheatear, a bird that I have never seen before. I thought the name must be something to do with wheat fields but it actually means white arse. I think that this lovely bird, fresh from Africa, is a female.

My granddaughter is having a wonderful time at the experimental music festival in Sefton Park, Liverpool
