Patchwork landscapes

We decide not to attempt the coast today; always best to avoid the weekend if at all possible. Instead, we decide to explore the locality. There is a walk directly from our cottage, but we decide instead to head for a longer walk around Rudston - allegedly the oldest village in England.

The signpost ‘Megalith in Churchyard’ had caught my eye as we passed yesterday, and it is here we start our walk. Sure enough, right next to the church is a gigantic column of stone, some 25.5 ft high - the tallest standing stone in Britain, dating back to Neolithic times.

The walk itself is through the undulating landscapes of the Yorkshire Wolds, rich in varying colours and textures, deeply furrowed fields, green fields, the ever present  flamboyance of oilseed rape - all embellished by the light and shade of intermittent sunlight. There are so many things I could have chosen as today’s Blip - but it’s this recurring patchwork quilt that ultimately makes the cut.

Although not long, the walk is tiring - not least because last week’s torrential rain has made in muddy underfoot, and here it seems to gather round your boots until you feel the soles have turned to lead! So getting back to our lovely cottage, lighting the fire - though it’s been really warm today - and settling down with a G&T has been most welcome!

Extras are of our chocolate box cottage and of Rudston church and village - including the famous megalith!
