Empty Spaces

For the past fortnight this space has been full of rotten wood - the remains of the old deck. For the last ten days there have also been a few bits of good wood - the offcuts from the new deck.
We were promised that all this rubbish would be taken away last Tuesday (with a caveat of “hopefully!”) As such, whenever we went out we had to make sure we moved whichever car wasn’t being used onto the road so that the man could get his wagon down the drive.
Like most tradesperson’s promises “last Tuesday” proved to be a bit of an open ended deadline, and it was only today - a week later - that he arrived, in a rush, in the middle of the afternoon. I offered to move the cars but he was in too much of a hurry and promised to be careful. I thought I’d better help just in case there was unintentional wood/car contact!
With both of us doing the shifting, it didn’t take long to load up and it was soon down to just a few small offcuts. Which Mrs C immediately pounced upon as being ideal for putting under plant pots! So that was it for rubbish removal, and all I had to do was sweep up the scraps to leave us with a clean drive upon which we can now park the cars without worrying about hitting a pile of rotting wood each time we opened the door!
The good news was that, because he had been so busy, he hadn’t had time yet to draw up the invoice. No need to rush, I told him as he went on his way....
