Another past concert programme & ticket memento from my photo book.

16 years ago today; the Live8 concert at Murrayfield Stadium: ‘Edinburgh 50,000 - the Final Push’

The main Live8 concerts had been held at Wembley Stadium, plus some other stadiums around the world, a few days earlier. They were one of the cornerstones of the Make Poverty History campaign which had been set up to apply pressure on the heads of the then G8 countries to increase their levels of aid to the world’s poorer countries. The Edinburgh concert was held the evening before the leaders’ meeting at Gleneagles. Tickets were free, allocated in a random draw.

There had been some anticipation that Nelson Mandela would be making an appearance, but he appeared only on screen, his health by that point not being up to the journey. He still got probably the loudest welcome from the audience!

Highlights: The Proclaimers, Annie Lennox, Midge Ure, Texas, Snow Patrol, but mostly James Brown – he was phenomenal!

Further memories in this series will surely follow…
