Birthday boy!

Not really a boy at 93! Barry's dad was so pleased we had gone over to celebrate his birthday. After his fall a few weeks ago he has been struggling a bit and worries that he isn't able to help around the house. He has always been such a busy man, a carpenter by trade and so was always making or building something. He hates it that he now has to 'get a man in' for all the jobs he used to do, and then sit back and watch. Barry's mum is 91 and they are doing really well on a daily basis, living at home with no help with daily chores. She is finding it difficult since his dad fell a second time, just this week, luckily not doing as much damage as the previous time. She worries constantly about him moving around as he refuses to use any kind of aid. I can understand why as he is very unsteady and doesn't actually walk but shuffle everywhere and so in danger of catching his feet on any little uneven flooring, especially in the garden, his pride and joy. I tried to persuade him that he might find something to lean on useful but he was having none of it and I didn't want to upset him on his birthday. He is such a proud man. Barry's sister is coming to stay with us in a few weeks and we're going over to see them so maybe we can have another try. It would give Barry's mum some peace of mind at least. We bought him a DVD player for his birthday as he doesn't get about so much and some old Morecombe and Wise   shows. Barry set it up for them and showed his mum how to use it and he was so thrilled. We hope it will bring him some hours of pleasure and something we can all buy them, a little bit of nostalgia. We collected fish and chips for lunch, a treat as they don't get out anymore.
I took some cuttings from their garden which is so pretty and beautifully maintained see extras, despite the fact their gardener doesn't do it to their exacting standards! I felt very privileged as his dad gave me his lightweight strimmer to use on my newly developing top garden as I can't use the industrial one that Barry has. I can now do my own grass without having to ask for help. As with everything it has been beautifully maintained and cared for so I will look after it.
The journey was the worst part of the day. I hate the bone shaker old Landrover, with not a spring insight! To add insult to an already unpleasant journey a bee flew in through the window and stung my ring finger! Luckily I removed my rings before it swelled up!
Despite the travelling it was a lovely day.
