A Day In The Life

Day 6

While covering the AOG 10km (6.21mi) Race earlier today I witnessed a near Bird Brawl at the 5km Pit Stop where racers are permitted to refuel for a few seconds without affecting their race time. These Pit Stops are specifically designed for our avian racers. They offer a variety of energy snacks, along with fresh spring water in droplet or bath form, to keep the athletes well nourished and hydrated • The Bird Brawl that almost broke out happened at the Suet Cage after Carlos Catbird flew in to grab a quick beak full. Suddenly, without warning, RayRay the Bluejay swoops in. With a puffed chest he perched on one of the lower branches of the nearby Resting Tree, and purposely made eye contact with Carlos. There was no mistaking what he was up to. Well, Carlos perceived this as an instant threat, and signaled to RayRay to back off with flared tail feathers. It was an intense few seconds, believe me, but RayRay the Bluejay made the right choice and moved down to the ground level to nibble at the Assorted Nut Tray before flying back to the race. By this time Carlos had already returned. Whew! The few of us here thought for sure feathers would be flying every which way. In the end they kept their cool • We’ll have to wait and see if these two competitors can stay focused to finish these last 5km. A medal or perhaps two will be dependent on it.
