Kingfisher

It’s been three weeks since our last visit to The Spinnies, and I feel hoping to see a kingfisher again is probably a tad optimistic. Still, the tide’s just right today, filling the lagoon with fish-rich sea water, so there’s certainly the possibility of a visit.

We settle down in the hide with one or two others, and before too long there’s a flash of blue as a kingfisher swoops across the water to perch on a nearby branch. The light is dreadful, but the important thing is that she’s there in front of us.

Suddenly, she’s up and off again, but rather than disappearing from view, she lands again, this time at a distance - but the better light more than compensates. And then she turns away from us, revealing that brilliant blue flash right down her back. Gorgeous.

We snap away as she turns first one way, then another, contorting as she preens that glorious plumage. Sadly, she seems to have no interest in fishing, and in another flash she leaves her perch, swoops once again across the water, and disappears once more.

The main is definitely better ‘large’ - the ISO means it needs all the help it can get!

As usual, it’s hard to choose, so I’ve included a few more in extras!
