The Fauld Crater

The scene of a huge explosion in 1944, the Crater is still there.

The RAF Ammunition store went up with such ferocity you could hear it in London. There were 90 fatalities, but as it was sensitive information, it did not receive much press attention.

With a friend, I walked down to the memorial. It's all fenced off, labelled DANGER - unexploded bombs. So overgrown at this time of year, it's hard to get the idea of its size.

Afterwards, a meal in the local pub, with a view across to the end of the Pennines.
