Horseshoe weir

This is the amazing horseshoe weir that holds back the R Derwent so that sufficient force was available (along with other adaptations) to power a massive waterwheel. Today we visited the local mill museum that brought home the whole complexity within simplicity that brought industry to Derbyshire. Simple water power but complex machinery alongside a good workforce that were reasonably looked after - enough that they didn't rebel in the way that the Derby workers did.

We had a lovely walk along said river with Berry before the museum and were shown around the place by a local lady called Val. She had so much information to impart, it was hard to remember I had a deadline and not keep asking questions. Intricate machines that made hosiery fascinated me, as did the incredible cotton spinning machines. How does a mind work out such intricacies?!

Anyway, despite my best efforts to procrastinate, we had to get back to pack up. At least at this point all the decisions about what to take are made but this time I need to make sure Berry can still get in via the passenger door!

Berry has been eyeing me askance all afternoon!!
