Val Bennett - The Russians Are Coming (released 1968, for Lee's Records, Kingston, Jamaica)
Over the years on her Sunday show Cerys Matthews has played a number of versions of Dave Brubeck's surprise hit Take Five, so named because it is played in 5/4 time and derived from a live showpiece of the Dave Brubeck Quartet's drummer Joe Morello, although the tune is credited to their alto sax player Paul Desmond. The song was featured in the Radio 4 series Add To Playlist, presented by Cerys Matthews and Jeffrey Boakye, and included renditions by the Sachal Studios Orchestra (featuring lots of sitar) and a version by the Cuban trombonist Rico Rodriguez converted into ska beat 4/4 time. She could have played a later version he made in 1976 under the title Man From Wareika. In the past the LOTD has featured versions by Helen and the Horns, Sachal Studios Orchestra and Chet Atkins, as well as the wonderful original.
This version was recorded by Val Bennett, a tenor sax and trombone player, and the Aggrovators for producer Bunny Lee in 1967 under the title The Russians Are Coming, possibly a reference to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1961. The flute-led dub that occupies the second half first appeared c. 1971 on Brad Osbourne's Bronx-based Clocktower label.
