Log Jam

The creek has gone down a lot, but the banks are lined with debris that washed down from the fire scarred hill. It is impossible to convey how big the log jam is. It is probably 10 feet high from one bank of the creek to the other just at the level of Bruce and Cindy's house on the right. There are logs in there that are 3 feet in diameter along with burned telephone poles and parts of houses. The water has made a tunnel under the jam but any rainstorm could wash down more debris which will block the creek again. Another atmospheric river is predicted for Monday night but is not expected to bring more than three inches of rain.

We went to Western Farm Supply this morning to look for a bed for Spike. I love to go there...they sell everything from live chickens (we could hear a rooster crowing from the barn as we walked by) to Ivermectin, the famous horse wormer that was touted to the credulous as a cure? preventive? treatment? for Covid. Today they were having a low cost inoculation clinic for dogs. People were standing among the hay bales in several long lines with their pets patiently waiting their turn. It wasn't possible to get a good picture of that either, but I was impressed at how well behaved all the dogs and their people were.

Western Farm Supply is in a part of town that I have always liked...a combination of railroad tracks, now used regularly by the SMART train, huge old red brick warehouses and tidy little Victorian era homes.

Flying Goat coffee of Aztek Mocha fame used to be here but apparently didn't survive the pandemic lockdown, even though they served the best coffee in town. They didn't serve much else, though and are being replaced by a place called Branch Line which isn't open yet but will serve a plant based breakfast and lunch menu and presumably coffee. When we first moved here I enjoyed driving across town having a coffee at Flying Goat and wandering around the neighborhood which is probably where Santa Rosa had its residential beginnings. We checked out the Criminal Baking Company, newly located in a red brick warehouse space with tables set out in front of it and a very dark little cubbyhole of a space dispensing  baked goods and coffee. It looked very pleasant in today's  brilliant sunshine but would have very little appeal on a cold rainy day.

I may have to venture back down there to the Apple store, for I really need to upgrade my phone. I will take my camera with me and reward myself with a wander through the Railroad Square district.

John decided to give Jim the day off, and is making pulled pork for Sunday dinner. We turned our clocks back last night so we will have to adjust to descending darkness at 5pm.
