Eastwood Metropark

Sunday Nov 7
With the beautiful weather continuing, we decided to go a bit further afield today, and drove up to Dayton to explore a couple of their Metroparks, which were new to us. We first visited Eastwood Park, northeast of the city, not far from Wright Patterson AFB and the National Air Force museum. There is a lake, access to the Mad River and a series of ponds and lagoons, offering various water sports for the summer months, as well as hiking. One of the lakes has a series of small islands, joined by attractive stone bridges. We walked 3 1/2 miles here, before continuing to Hills and Dales Metro Park, south of Dayton ( see extra collage) where we walked another 2 1/2 miles. The elaborate monument in the lower right is of John H. Patterson, founder of the National Cash Register company, and was erected in the 1920s. He believed education, recreation and outdoor exercise were the pillars of good health. Patterson became nationally known when he spearheaded the relief work after the devastating 1913 Dayton flood, and raised $2 million to fund a flood control and prevention plan.
