Seated IV

One of four sculptures that first graced the facade of the Metropolitan Museum in NYC in 2019 as part of a commission titled “The NewOnes, will free Us” by Wangechi Mutu, Seated IV now sits at the north side of the new Hans Rosling Center for Population Health on the UW campus.  It was a beautiful day for our walk around the campus and a better look at her.   The artist was interested in Caryatids, women across the globe and history supporting architecture.  This link has a 3 minute video (at the end of the article, from the Met..not the installation video in the middle)  that is the best explanation by the artist of this work, if you have time or interest.  It also has more of the artists statement.   It’s a powerful piece and perfect for International Women’s Day which I think is the Math 8th.

(Even tho I studied here in the late 70s, there were many paths I never took and of course lots of new buildings.   Really a fun walk….We found Tatum’s dorm not far from the art building actually.   Intended to see an exhibit in the library but it’s closed on Sat…but parking was free!)

The extra is Seated IV from the back another day showing the  Hans Rosling Building which will be worth a blip of it’s own one day.   It too was closed on Sat.

Edit.   The plant based breaded crab cakes  were VERY tasty!
