BUFFETED BY THE WIND AND RAIN

As the rain lashed down
On a morning that didn't feel at all Spring-like
I watched these daffodils
Being tossed and blown
By the wind
And my instinct was
To pick them and
Bring them indoors
Out of the wind and rain
So that they could be
Sheltered and warm
But of course I did no such thing
Because I know that being tossed
And blown about
Is what makes them strong.

As I watched I could see that
Although their stems were bending
As the wind blew
Because they are supple and
Planted deep in the ground
They stood firm and strong.

Watching the trees
I realise that they do the same
They may bend and creak
As the wind and rain pummells
Their leaves and branches
But as long as their roots go deep
They too stand firm and strong.

In a few days
Once the rain and wind have stopped buffeting
These beautiful flowers
They will once again be standing
Tall and strong
Looking up into the Spring sunshine
And blooming -
Their purpose in life.

Sometimes we allow the “storms of life”
To destroy us
Rather than letting them
“Make us strong”.
When we have been battered
By the winds of adversity
We are often able to withstand
Much more than we ever thought
So that once the storms in our life are over
We can look up
Bloom
And bless those around us
Who are going through their own storm.
