A Bonus Bug Makes Green And Gold

Australia's national sports teams wear the green and gold so perhaps this metallic little fly knew that when it landed on this golden Grevillea. I was blipping the flowers on this plant which are gorgeous enough - so the arrival of this bug came as a bonus. I think it's official name is neomyia viridescens, far pleasanter than 'Green Bottle'.

I wonder why these flies, which lead a rather unglamorous life, look so jewel-like; they are so brightly irridescent. Nature no doubt has good reasons.
